CHAPTERS 3 – 7 : GETTING STARTED

I have not had much time to work on the project since we have brought it home.  I did manage to set up the “Hangar”, install an attic and put all the stuff away that was taking up space.    I spent a number of hours updating the plans and comparing the plans with what I saw in front of me.  I did manage to save several hundred hours buying an abandoned project, but it will still take quite a bit of analysis before I can get going.

April 5, 2007:

I mixed a sample batch of epoxy just to see how the process works and to try to do a scratch test on the results.  I got the mixing ratio wrong (which came as a surprise, given that one of my majors were Applied Math).  The sample cured under less than perfect conditions (approx 55F – 60F).  After 24 hours it did pass the scratch test, but broke when I took it out of the cup.

April 11, 2007:

The weather has not been good (very cold), so I have not been able to mix another batch of epoxy.  I have been working on putting together a list of parts/supplies that I will need to complete Chapter 8 and then start on Chapter 9.

I placed an order with Feather Lite for the Main Landing Gear Strut and Nose Gear Strut.  Michael Dilley was very friendly and helpful over the phone.  Expected delivery date is mid-May 2007.

I also placed an order with Aircraft Spruce for SEVERAL parts needed, including:

I managed to lose the permanent firewall when I brought the project home.  I bought some spruce to remake it.  It will give me a good point to start off from.

I turned the tub over to work on some of the rough edges of previous layups.  The pictures below represent a “Before / After” scenario.  I now understand why people complain about the amount of dust that gets created.

The landing brake is broken in one area and the foam is cut/broken in several areas.  I am considering removing the whole landing brake and constructing a completely new one. I am also planning on putting a full-length hinge for additional sturdiness.  See pictures below.
